The world's highest fibre wholegrain, developed by CSIRO, has been used in a food product for the first time in the newly launched ‘Goodness Superfoods' range of breakfast cereals.
The new grain, called BARLEYmaxTM, features in two initial products - Digestive 1st and Protein 1st. Both breakfast cereals will benefit from the super-wholegrain's double fibre content and superior levels of resistant starch which promotes better bowel and digestive health.

Protein 1st contains super wholegrains for balance, shape and energy release, plus protein to maintain muscle and bone strength. Both cereals have a low gylcemic index, making them suitable for consumers who have diabetes or are who are heart and weight conscious.

Australian scientists at the CSIRO have reportedly developed a wheat grain called Barleymax which can help prevent Cancer and Diabetes. Barley Max is currently for sale by health food company Goodness Superfoods in two varieties, Digestive 1st and Protein 1st, with Heart 1st due on sale in October 2009. Matthew Morell, spokesman, CSIRO says the Barley Max allows cereals to contain up to twice their previous amount of fibre which can reduce the risk of colon or rectal cancer and constipation. The grain's low Glycemic Index also aids Diabetes sufferers according to Morrell. Dr Joanna MacMillan Price, nutritionist says consumption of Barleymax may help reduce obesity levels in Australia. Dr David Topping, researcher, CSIRO says he believes Barleymax will be similar to Penicillin in terms of it's impact on current scientific thinking.
