The following responses have been compiled from a list of the most commonly asked questions surrounding the Goodness Superfoods range. All answers have been provided by Dr Joanna McMillan Price.
Is the Goodness Superfoods cereal range gluten free? Are the levels of gluten high, medium or low?
No, the Goodness Superfoods cereals are not gluten free as the BARLEYmax grain itself contains gluten. Although the CSIRO have measured the levels of protein in the BARLEYmax grain, the gluten levels have not been determined. Therefore, we can't advise if the levels of gluten in our cereals are high, medium or low.
What does GI mean?
GI stands for Glycaemic index. This is a ranking of carbohydrate-containing foods based on how they affect blood sugar levels. Low GI foods, such as the Goodness Superfoods cereal range, are digested and absorbed slowly, reducing the rise in blood glucose (and subsequently the hormone insulin) compared to a high GI food. This helps to give you more steady energy levels and keeps you fuller for longer, making that mid-morning energy slump where you reach for something sweet less likely. Eating low GI foods is especially beneficial in the management of blood sugar levels in those with diabetes.
What is GMO?
GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms. This is where a desired gene in an animal or plant is copied and inserted into the cells of another living organism to give a desired characteristic. Because the resulting plants, animals or microbes have had their genetic material altered in some way, they are commonly referred to as 'genetically modified' or 'GM' organisms.
BARLEYmax has been bred using conventional plant breeding techniques such as cross breeding and is not genetically modified in any way. This is why we make the statement on our packaging that our cereals are GMO free.
Will these cereals help me lose weight?
The Goodness Superfoods range of cereals are ideal as part of a weight loss diet. Being low GI they help to keep you full throughout the morning, reducing snacking, and may even help you to eat less at the next meal. They are also low in added sugars compared to other breakfast cereals, and high in fibre - both factors known to help weight loss. The Protein 1st variety has the added advantage of boosted protein levels. Protein helps to satisfy you and ward off hunger pangs between meals, and research has shown a little extra protein can help weight loss and prevent weight re-gain.
Are these cereals suitable for Types 1 and 2 diabetics?
Absolutely. Those with diabetes need carbohydrate-containing foods that will not lead to 'spikes' in their blood sugars. All the Goodness Superfoods cereals have a low GI making them ideal.
Will this help me manage my IBS/Diverticulitis/constipation?
Yes. The basis of all our cereals is the supergrain BarleyMax developed by the CSIRO. This grain is truly fantastic for gut health. It has exceptionally high levels of total fibre, but also all three types of fibre - soluble, insoluble and resistant starch. The latter acts as 'gold star fuel' for the healthy bacteria in your bowel, promoting their growth and in turn contributing to improved gut health. All three fibre types will help keep you regular and with regularity symptoms of diverticulitis are also improved.
What is insoluble and soluble fibre?
Soluble fibre dissolves in water and can help lower cholesterol levels and slow down the absorption of carbohydrates, in turn reducing blood sugar responses. Insoluble fibre has water holding capabilities which helps with moving waste through the body. The insoluble fibre will take longer to empty from the stomach creating a full feeling for a longer period of time.
What is resistant starch?
Most starches are digested and absorbed through the small intestine, but resistant starch "resists" this digestion and passes through to the large intestine where it acts like dietary fibre, providing fuel to the good bacteria. It is now thought to be so important for our health that the latest Australian guidelines include a specific recommendation for intake of resistant starch. BARLEYmax, the key ingredient in the Goodness Superfoods cereals, is especially high in resistant starch.
